Methodology
Price Intel tracks the public online catalogues of the major South African grocery retailers daily. For each month, the index compares every product observed in both that month and the month before — the matched-SKU approach — using the last regular shelf price seen in each month (promotional prices are excluded where a regular price was observed, so the index reflects shelf-price moves rather than promo cycles).
Price relatives are aggregated with the Jevons formula (geometric mean), the standard method for elementary price indices, and extreme relatives (outside 0.5×–2× — typically listing errors or pack relaunches) are excluded. Groceries only; alcohol is out of scope. The index is not seasonally adjusted, covers online shelf prices (not till receipts), and is an independent estimate — it is not affiliated with or comparable one-for-one to Stats SA's CPI food basket.
